Healthy Hot Chocolate

By

Quick, Easy & Healthy!

I enjoy this hot chocolate as an afternoon pick-me-up or an after dinner dessert several times a week.  It is quick, easy, and healthy.  Dark unsweetened chocolate increases mid-brain serotonin and aids in the production of endorphins for a positive frame of mind.  It contains anti-oxidants that help fight cancer.   Dark chocolate also contains copper that helps you process iron.  The molasses you will use for sweetening is an excellent source of iron.

Here’s what you’ll do…

Set your Brita water to boil.

Measure the cocoa and cinnamon into the mug. Stir the powder & cinnamon with a fork to smooth out lumps.  Slowly pour in some boiling water, stirring all the time to avoid lumps.  Add water until the cup is about ¼ full.   Add the tablespoon of molasses.  Stir it into the cocoa mixture, then fill the mug up with milk, stirring the whole time.  Add the teaspoon of vanilla.  Stir.  Microwave on high for one minute.  Stir again.  Microwave for 30 seconds.  Stir again.  Microwave for another 30 seconds.  Stir again, and enjoy!

(Note: The reason you microwave the cocoa in increments is that milk will boil over if you try to microwave it all at once.)

I echo the above statement. This is perfect timing. We are heading to 20 below and we are in front of the fire.

Thank you.

I wish I had a cup of hot chocolate soy milk right now! Adding molasses (or is it mollasses?)is a great idea! Just peeked quickly at your writings. Somewhere you probably already noted to use only Fair Trade organic chocolate not produced by child-slaves.

Thank you, Suza! (It's Molasses! :) While I whole-heartedly support the concept of buying only fair trade items, I am far too poverty stricken to do it myself! When I can I do, and anyone who can afford it, should definitely consider it! :D

Just checked - I've got all those ingrediants - well, I use a different water filter - I'm planning to make your recipe for my mid-afternoon break later today. Thanks.

Healthy hot chocolate? I'm sure that this recipe is far more healthy than my traditional hot chocolate Sunday morning ritual of melting chocolate bars and heavy whipping cream...What a great hub.

Well, yours sounds good, too! ;P
